Taming of the Phage: Determining the Molecular Dials of Viral Diversity in the Ocean and Beyond
Viruses of prokaryotes (phages) dominate the biosphere and have cascading effects on biogeochemical cycles by modulating the physiology, evolution, and composition of host communities, which power these cycles. While great strides have been made in capturing phage diversity through sequencing in recent decades, their vast diversity challenges existing taxonomic frameworks, and the impact of their diversity on host interactions remain poorly constrained. Here, I will be discussing recent projects toward developing an evolutionary framework for organizing phage diversity, improving methods to capture their diversity at single-virus resolution, and mapping a quantitative atlas of antiviral defenses within marine prokaryotes to begin resolving the intracellular mechanisms mediating virus-cell interactions in the ocean.
