Legacies of Stress: Eco-Evolutionary Consequences of Transgenerational and Carryover Effects in Marine Systems
Phenotypic plasticity is a critical mechanism that allows organisms to respond to sudden changes in their current environment. But growing evidence from across systems also suggests that past environments experienced by individuals either directly (i.e., early in life) or indirectly (e.g., by previous generations) alter phenotypes via plasticity. These "legacy effects" matter not only for individuals by impacting fitness but can also influence processes at the population, community, and ecosystem scale. Here I present results of legacy effects experiments across three marine systems - rocky shores, oyster reefs, and invasive barnacles - in response to a variety of stressors. My talk highlights the universality of legacy effects as a mediator of organism performance in marine systems and their potential to alter food chains, species invasions, and ecosystem function.
