New Perspectives on Classic Problems: Case Studies on Nutrient Dynamics Over the Northeast U.S. Shelf
Nitrate is a crucial macronutrient for phytoplankton growth and often limits primary productivity in the ocean. Thus, characterizing nitrate dynamics and studying its constraining processes are of primary importance in advancing our understanding of oceanic ecosystem function. In this talk, we present high-resolution in situ nitrate measurements collected from a station array over the Mid-Atlantic Bight. These nitrate observations, along with hydrographic data and relevant biogeochemical variables, were collected quarterly since 2019, serving the objectives of the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological (NES-LTER) Research project. Using these interdisciplinary datasets, we 1) quantify vertical nitrate flux into the euphotic layer to better understand new vs. recycled production; 2) identify direct evidence of nitrate upwelling and near-bottom flow convergence that are suggested to mechanistically link to the elevated primary production over the NES shelf break region. Together, we aim to provide fresh perspectives on some classic problems that are limited by the spatial-temporal coverage and resolutions of the observational data.
