Abstract:

What is the "value" of conserving Ocean Twilight Zone (OTZ) biomass? How much is additional Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) monitoring worth to the public? Many of the things we "value" as scientists and practitioners are not traded in markets - there isn't a set price or quantity that is posted for sale. So then, how can we measure and communicate the social benefits and costs of these "non-market" goods like OTZ biomass or scientific research? This seminar will provide an overview of how economists define "value" and introduce the tools of non-market valuation using examples from Marine Policy Center's research on OTZ fisheries and HAB monitoring. This seminar is designed with non-economists in mind. Come learn about ways to measure and communicate the value of your work and the policies it influences!
