Investigating the Impact of Eddies and Fronts on Mesopelagic Micronekton: Insights from Sonar Acoustics and Light Attenuation
Ocean features like fronts and mesoscale eddies (few weeks-months, 10-100km) play a key role in structuring the distribution of planktonic organisms and influence the movement and behavior of large mobile pelagic species. However, their impact on mesopelagic fish, squid, and crustaceans is still relatively unexplored, partially because of the technical and logistical challenges associated with studying the deep ocean. In this talk I will discuss how sonar acoustics surveys from the North Atlantic and Southern Ocean showed how fronts and mesoscale eddies can separate and potentially trap mesopelagic communities. I will finally present some work in progress aimed at exploring whether it is possible to complement our acoustic understanding of deep scattering layers with observations of light attenuation from autonomous vehicles and animal-borne sensors. These approaches bring us closer to resolving the complexities of mesopelagic ecosystems and their interactions with dynamic oceanographic features.
