Contests Beyond Behavior: Using Mantis Shrimp to Gain Integrative Insights to Animal Fights
Contests over limited and essential resources are crucial to animal survival and reproduction and exert a strong selective pressure on diverse animal traits. In the past 50 years, most research in contests has focused on the behaviors animals use while fighting, while comparatively less work has studied the physical (e.g., biomechanical) mechanisms of these behaviors, or their ecological and evolutionary consequences. Many species of mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda: Crustacea) use spring-powered appendages to deliver bullet-like strikes onto each other's armored tailplates during contests over territory. The extreme nature of competition in this system makes it ideal for testing not only the behavioral strategies used when fighting, but also probing the biomechanical basis of these behaviors, and how these contests affect ecology and evolution. I will describe my work in this system, asking questions that range from how animals with deadly weapons use ritualized strikes to avoid injury, to how impact-resistant armor evolves.
