Proteomes as Bridges to Biogeochemistry
There is an orchestra of molecular processes occurring in all cells, at all times. This nano-scale orchestra is ultimately what underpins global patterns in the ocean, like the distribution of primary production. In this talk I will try to bridge these scales by connecting several biogeochemical quantities of interest to molecular properties; namely, the rates of reactions and organismal elemental stoichiometry. First, using data from model organisms in cultures, I will present evidence that proteomic profiles encode sufficient information to accurately predict reactions rates. Second, using metaproteomic measurements from the Southern Ocean, I will estimate the contribution specific proteins have to metal-to-carbon ratios. Finally, I will end with a forward-looking view on how to incorporate molecular measurements with biogeochemical modelling frameworks.
