A Change of Perspective in Understanding and Modeling Marine Biogeochemistry Using Entropy Production; It's the Law, Probably
Marine biogeochemical cycles are driven by microorganisms that inhabit the global ocean, so it is natural to base our understanding, and the models we develop, on the growth characteristics and food web structures of microorganisms. This approach works well; however, most of the details needed for these reductionist-based models are lacking due to the extreme diversity and complexity of marine microbial food webs. To circumvent this lack of knowledge, we can take a different perspective that views energy dissipation, aka entropy production, as the primary driver of system evolution and organization, albeit constrained by the limits of biology. This presentation will cover how the maximum entropy production (MEP) principle can be implemented to understand marine biogeochemistry, how biological temporal strategies differentiate life from abiotic systems, and how coordination over space can facilitate energy dissipation. Both field observations and microcosm studies combined with MEP-based metabolic models will be used to demonstrate the approach.
