The Spatial and Population Ecology of Seabirds, Sentinels of the Ocean
Marine top predators offer an invaluable viewpoint into the changing oceans. My research focusses on the population and spatial ecology of "tube-nosed" seabirds (albatross, petrels and shearwaters), pelagic apex predators distributed across the oceans of the world. In this talk, I will present our recent discoveries on the foraging strategies adopted by an exceptionally wide-ranging predator supremely adapted for efficient flight, which challenge our intuitive understanding of what "optimal foraging" is. Then, integrating multi-decadal demographic and movement databases, I will highlight the sentinel role of seabirds by showcasing the population responses of Southern Ocean albatrosses to marine ecosystem changes. Collectively, our findings highlight the importance of monitoring the diagnostic responses of these sentinels of the global ocean adopting a multi-disciplinary analytical lens and using multi-dimensional datasets, leveraging long-term historical records and the latest technological developments.
