How Metabolic Evolution Shapes Ocean Ecosystems Over Geologic Time
Oceanic microbial ecosystems mediate the global cycling of carbon and other elements, shaping Earth, the biosphere and global climate. In this talk I will show how metabolism offers a powerful lens for reconstructing microbial macroevolution and revealing forces that drive self-organization at ecosystem scales. I will primarily focus on highly abundant marine picocyanobacteria and co-occurring heterotrophs that have been co-evolving over the past ~500 million years, a period during which the Earth system as a whole underwent dramatic global change.
