Modeling Phytoplankton Stoichiometry Across Taxonomic Groups And Nutrient Regimes

Phytoplankton stoichiometry partly modulates the flow of carbon at the global scale, motivating efforts to understand and resolve variable C:N:P ratios in biogeochemical models. Elemental ratios reflect both acclimation and taxonomic differences. We compiled a large database of stoichiometric data from laboratory experiments and adapted a mechanistic, cellular scale model (Inomura et al., 2020) which allocates carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus to key macromolecular pools as a function of growth rate light intensity. By comparing model and database, we examined whether the mechanisms governing cellular allocation are preserved across taxonomic groups and under different nutrient regimes. We find that C:N is robustly predicted under N-limitation with a single set of model parameters across a wide range of taxa, while C:P under P-limitation is more taxonomically dependent. There are distinctly different allocation regimes between nutrient limited and replete conditions.
