Using Genomic Tools to Unveil Diversity, Diversification, and Connectivity in a Major Deep-Sea Invertebrate Group
Squat lobsters are a prominent group in deep-sea benthic communities, inhabiting depths ranging from 0 to over 5,000 meters across various deep-sea habitats. They are common associates of cold-water corals and serve as one of the primary preys for macroinvertebrates and fishes. While taxonomic research is active, genomic studies on the diversification and connectivity of these conspicuous animals are still in their infancy. The recent development of a UCE probe set for Malacostraca, comprising 20,000 probes targeting 1,348 unique UCE loci, marks a significant advancement in this field. Analysis of different squat lobster families (e.g., Eumunididae, Munidopsidae) using this probe set reveals the recovery of approximately 1,000 loci per sample. These tools have greatly enhanced our understanding of the evolutionary history of complex taxa and provided insights into the presence of cosmopolitanism versus species complexes within certain clades.
