Subject: NAAFE Special Session
Jin,
Hope all is well.
As you know, we are working on a special session for NAAFE which looks to increase interdisciplinary collaborations in the Woods Hole community and beyond. We are hoping you could help us advertise our special session appropriately within WHOI. Below is an announcement we would greatly appreciate if you could forward to the appropriate individuals.
Thanks, and please let me know if you need any additional information.

We cordially invite you to attend “Economics and the Woods Hole Science Community” from 3:00 - 4:30 pm on Wednesday, May 24.
The North American Association of Fisheries Economists Forum is coming to Woods Hole May 23-26, 2023. As part of the program, we are hosting a special session on “Economics and the Woods Hole Science Community” to promote greater linkages between economics and the other scientific disciplines represented in Woods Hole. The goal is to foster awareness, highlight emerging issues, and increase collaboration with fisheries, ecosystem, climate, and ocean science disciplines.
The Special Session aims to address two things. The first is to showcase the broad breadth of research that NAAFE economists have conducted that would be of interest to the Woods Hole community of scientists. The second is to showcase the diversity of research conducted in the Woods Hole community to the NAAFE economists. The panel consists of:
- Jennifer Meredith - Colby College
- Megan Tyrrell - Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Reserve
- Rob Theiler - United States Geological Survey, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center
- Rob Griffin – UMASS Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology and Stanford Natural Capital Project
- Ciara Willis - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
- Keita Abe - Musashi University
- Frank Asche - University of Florida, Institute for Sustainable Food Systems and School of Forestry Resources and Conservation
- David McGlinchey – Woodwell Climate Research Center
- Tammy Murphy – NOAA Fisheries, Northeast Fisheries Sciences Center, Social Sciences Branch
Panelists will briefly describe their research portfolio at the generalist level with a focus on entry-points for other scientific disciplines. We will also ask panelists to address the following:
- What is a “big, emerging issue” in their discipline?
- How can their research link with other disciplines?
- What is missing that would be strengthened by a link to other disciplines?
