Identifying the Effects of Ocean Warming on Global Fisheries Catches
Climate change is already affecting marine ecosystems all around the world and shifting species from their historical ranges into previously unsuitable and sometimes poorly protected environments. Assessing the effects of climate-induced ocean warming on marine fish and fisheries is essential to achieving sustainable and climate-adapted management practices of the marine environment. A well-established approach to assess such changes is the mean temperature of the catch index (MTC), which can detect ocean warming signals from the most widely available dataset for fisheries, i.e., fisheries catches. Globally, the rise in ocean temperature is reflected in the increasing MTC of fisheries catches in temperate marine ecosystems, after also accounting for the effects of fishing and large-scale oceanographic variability. The so called "tropicalization" of catches (i.e., the increase of warm-water or thermophilous species in higher latitude catches) may have serious implications for the fisheries sector, especially in transboundary regions, such as the NW Atlantic Ocean (Canada and US), where fish stocks are shared between different countries and bilateral, collaborative and scientifically informed actions need to be taken. Here, in addition to global patterns, we will discuss preliminary results of MTC patterns along a latitudinal gradient on the east coasts of the US and Canada. First results indicate that, overall, the MTC has been increasing in the NW Atlantic for the past few decades due to a considerable decline in catches of cold-water species like cod and halibut, and a more gradual increase in catches of warmer-water species such as lobster and mackerel.
