Energetic Tradeoffs Under Stressful Conditions
Increasing human influences in coastal areas presents stresses for nearshore marine animals that can strongly influence energy dynamics. The result is often tradeoffs in energy allocation. I will present two case studies that demonstrate tradeoffs in energetically stressed animals. The first case study will examine polar bear energy dynamics during autumn and winter periods in the Southern Beaufort Sea and the role of carcasses left by Native Alaskan subsistence whale hunting in moderating optimal habitat choice and reproductive decisions by adult female polar bears. The second case study will examine tradeoffs in energy allocation following limb loss in the invasive Asian shore crab along the invaded North American range.
