Exploring the evolution of bacterial complexity using Multicellular
Magnetotactic Bacteria
Multicellularity has independently evolved at least 25 times in the
domains of Bacteria and Eukarya, indicating that this process is not an
evolutionary bottleneck. While a significant amount of research has been
dedicated to understanding how multicellularity evolved in Eukarya, our
knowledge of multicellularity in Bacteria remains limited. To better
understand bacterial multicellularity, we investigated cellular
differentiation of individual cells within multicellular magnetotactic
bacteria (MMB), a group within the Desulfobacterota that are found at
Little Sippewissett salt marsh (LSSM) in Falmouth, MA. To investigate
the MMB, we have used a combination of genomic techniques, stable
isotope probing, bioorthogonal labeling, fluorescent microscopy, Raman
microspectroscopy, and electron microscopy. This cohesive approach has
allowed us to better understand their metabolic potential, physiology,
and morphology.
