Hearing, soundscape dynamics, and vocalizations of diving Alcid seabirds
Anthropogenic noise is pervasive across marine and terrestrial
environments and has been documented to interfere with biological
systems in a diverse range of animal taxa, including birds. Seabirds
live at the interface of terrestrial and marine habitats and exploit
resources in both media. Thus, they face a particularly unique
combination of potential impacts from noise exposure in both marine and
terrestrial environments, particularly species near the Arctic where
anthropogenic encroachment is predicted to accelerate due to the effects
of climate change. Using field-based electrophysiological methods
combined with passive acoustic recorders, our recent research documents
the hearing abilities, soundscape dynamics, and vocalizations of three
species of Alcid seabird; the common murre, marbled murrelet, and
Atlantic puffin. Our results provide baseline data on the acoustic
systems of each species, which is a required first step towards
effective assessment and mitigation of potential noise impacts.
