"Our Story: The Complicated Relationship of the Indigenous Wampanoag and the Mayflower Pilgrims

Provincetown is a champion of diversity, inclusion and tolerance. At the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum (PMPM) it is our mission to make sure this history is told correctly.

In partnership with SmokeSygnals, a leading Native American creative agency, the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum established a new, permanent exhibit, “Our Story: The Complicated Relationship of the Indigenous Wampanoag and the Mayflower Pilgrims.”

The exhibit is interactive, modern, technological, but most important, accurate. It illustrates the early history of the Wampanoag Nation on Cape Cod, up to and including the arrival of the Mayflower in 1620."

With support from the Falmouth Education Foundation, Falmouth High School ceramics students were able to participate in a series of mini-workshops led by professional Cape Cod ceramic artists. The resulting work by the students will be on display at Brick Kiln Farm over the next week, starting Saturday, May 15.

Due to COVID constrictions students were unable to host visitors at the school; rather, ceramics teacher Corine Adams visited the artists and filmed the workshops, which students viewed virtually. The students were also able to meet the artists through Zoom discussions in class.

The students worked with Lois Hirshberg from Marstons Mills, who specializes in raku and saggar firing. Ms. Hirshberg taught the students how to slab-build geometric vessels and cover them in terra sigillata. She also demonstrated techniques on how to pack a saggar with salt, sugar, seaweed and more in aluminum foil. These materials give unglazed vessels lots of color.

Next the students worked with Pocasset artist Hollis Engley, who taught them how to make tea bowls using the Japanese technique called kurinuki. Traditionally, kurinuki bowls are fired in a wood kiln, and the students were able to have their work fired in Deb Hutchins’s wood kiln in Marstons Mills.

Finally, the students learned from Diane Heart from Heart Pottery in Brewster. Ms. Heart works primarily with porcelain and taught the students how she decorates and glazes her functional work. The students made porcelain coiled and carved vases, which were fired in Ms. Heart’s gas kiln.

The work will be on display at Brick Kiln Farm, 254 Brick Kiln Road, and is open for public viewing on the following days: Friday, May 21, from 2 to 5 PM, Saturday, May 22, from 11 AM to 3 PM and Sunday, May 23, from 11 AM to 3 PM.
