Morphogenetic manipulation of algal endosymbionts in a widespread
planktonic photosymbioses

Abstract: Phaeocystisis a globally abundant bloom-forming phytoplankton
genus that contributes substantially to global carbon and sulfur
cycling. Phaeocystis’ unique life-history—which includes solitary
flagellated, colonial, and endosymbiotic phases—contributes to its
ecological success. In my Ph.D. research, I investigated the nature of
Phaeocystis’ relationship with a symbiotic host—the acantharians,
another group of unicellular plankton—through the use of single-cell RNA
sequencing and advanced imaging techniques. My results showed that
acantharian hosts collect Phaeocystissymbionts on multiple occasions,
but maintain symbionts for extended periods of time. While inside hosts,
Phaeocystissymbionts are heavily manipulated and undergo a drastic
morphogenetic transformation. Ultimately, the acantharians transform
Phaeocystisinto internal photosynthetic engines. At WHOI, I am pivoting
my focus toward the colonial life-stage of Phaeocystis. The
mucilaginous, carbon-rich colony matrix is a unique interface for
bacteria-phytoplankton interactions. I am investigating how these
interactions may influence Phaeocystisbloom development and will present
preliminary results.
