Phytoplankton responses to physical forcings at different scales: case
studies in the northern Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of Maine

Abstract: As the foundation of ocean food web, phytoplankton support the
marine ecosystem by converting inorganic carbon and nutrients to organic
compounds. The phytoplankton dynamics are influenced by local and remote
physical forcings at different scales, and it is often challenging to
quantify the forcing and response scales and patterns in time and space.
Here, I apply physical-biogeochemical models and artificial neural
network to two highly productive U.S. shelf ecosystems: the northern
Gulf of Mexico (nGoM) and the Gulf of Maine (GoM), to explore
phytoplankton dynamics from event to interannual scales. My talk
includes two major parts: in the first part, I will present the
short-term responses of phytoplankton dynamics to a hurricane event in
the nGoM and the impact of sediment-induced light attenuation on
productivity. In the second part, the seasonality of phytoplankton
dynamics and the interannual variability of spring bloom magnitude in
the GoM will be presented, with a discussion regarding the possible
driving mechanisms responsible for the observed variability.
