Maternal care in the Scandinavian brown bear (Ursus arctos) in a context
of high hunting pressure

Abstract: Despite the benefits it offers to offspring, parental care is
costly in terms of time and energy for the parents. In nature, the
duration of maternal care often shows great variation between and within
species, which suggests it can be adjusted in response to intrinsic or
extrinsic factors. Since the duration of maternal care can influence
reproductive rates at the individual and population levels, identifying
the causes and the demographic consequences of variation in this life
history trait is important to predict the responses of wild populations
to potential changes in this trait. Here, I will present results from my
doctoral project in which I investigated the compromises in resources
allocation to reproduction, identified the determinants of the duration
of maternal care and measured the consequences of variation in this
trait at the individual and population levels in the Scandinavian brown
bear (Usus arctos). Since this population lives in a human-dominated
landscape and under high hunting pressure, it offered a very good
opportunity to study how the natural balance between the costs and
benefits associated with maternal care is affected by human activities.
