Using movement ecology to inform spatial management and conservation of
marine megafauna in the mid-Atlantic
Abstract - Ecosystem-based management of mobile marine megafauna
requires critical behavioral information (e.g. seasonal movements,
patterns of regional habitat use, location of foraging /breeding
grounds). Yet, this is a challenging task, as many species range over
vast or remote areas and spend all or most of their lives inaccessible
to direct observation. In the Azores - a top setting to study the
behaviors of diverse oceanic taxa - we have been combining observations
with various biotelemetric techniques to study large fishes (teleosts
and elasmobranchs) in their natural environment, from their fine-scale
use of mid-Atlantic ridge seamounts to the broader movements and
life-history strategies when these animals embark on annual migrations.
I’ll present and discuss a summary of these results.
