Discussion: Thursday, February 25
3:00 - 3:30 p.m.

/Must RSVP by Feb. 22 at 9:00 a.m. to watch the film./

Following the Battle of Antietam, Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew
Broderick) is offered command of the first all-African-American
regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. With junior officer
Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes), Shaw puts together a strong and proud unit,
including the escaped slave Trip (Denzel Washington) and the wise
gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman). At first limited to menial
manual tasks, the regiment fights to be placed in the heat of battle.

After watching the film, join us for a conversation with filmmaker, *Ed
Zwick* and *Leon Wilson* of the Museum of African American History.

Why is Dr. Ernest Everett Just so important to Black History Month

      <https://whoi-edu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ezQlBbmFQjaMGQC3b6Y55Q>

Mr. Jarmon developed an uncanny interest in Dr. Ernest Everett Just by
reading “The Black Apollo of Science”, the biography of Dr. Just. In the
year 1999, Mr. Jarmon petitioned the Prince George’s County Public
School Board to consider naming a new $26 million dollar school Ernest
Everett Just Middle School.  Mr. Jarmon’s attempts were rebuffed because
he was informed his petition should carry the weight of an established
organization.  Failing to find organizational support, Mr. Jarmon
created a not-for-profit organization, the Ernest Everett Just
Foundation, Inc. (EEJFI). Then the Foundation petitioned not only for
the naming of the school but that it be designated a science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) school. Both petitions
were granted, and thus, the Ernest Everett Just Middle School was
created to promote the education of STEM students.
