This Sunday, the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge is celebrating some of the
earliest sci-fi oddities in film history with a marathon of
black-and-white monster movies from the 1930s. See familiar tales like
“Frankenstein” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” as well as lesser-seen
titles like “Island of Lost Souls” and “The Invisible Man.” The marathon
is part of a larger early sci-fi celebration at the Cambridge theater,
which begins Friday, Jan. 24, and runs through Thursday, Jan.
30./(Sunday, Jan. 26 from 12:15 to 7 p.m. or 2:15 to 9 p.m.;Brattle

droves for free chocolate samples. Devour sweets from Blackbird
Doughnuts, Flour Bakery, Milk Bar, and more while live music plays in
the plaza. Need more than just an hour of free sweets? The festival runs
from Friday to Sunday, and features deals on chocolate and candy from

  ----------------

This Friday, Saturday, Sunday at Highfield Theater, Falmouth
a funny play about a crazy family

*The show: “You Can’t Take It With You,” by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman*

*What it’s about:*A comedy about how a young couple’s engagement brings
together an exuberant and eccentric family of modest means with a
wealthy and uptight society family.

*See it or not?*This is a charming show that gets funnier as it goes on,
and it is a pleasure to watch the ensemble cast bring a host of colorful
characters to life.

*Worth the price of admission:*Bernadette Ruskey as inebriated actress
Gaye Wellington, who is resurrected from her drunken stupor and attempts
to regale the Sycamores and their horrified visitors with a song.

*Fun fact:*The most recent Broadway version of the play starred James
Earle Jones in the role of Grandpa Vanderhof.

*Side note:*The play won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, one of only
a handful of comedies to do so. A film version, directed by Frank Capra,
went on to win 1938 Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director.

*If you go:*Presented by The Falmouth Theatre Guild at 7:30 p.m. Fridays
and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Jan. 26, The Highfield Theatre,
60 Highfield Drive, Falmouth; $23, $21 seniors, $19 for under age 18.

Just one of the exhibits at the MIT Museum in Cambridge:
Lighter, Stronger, Faster: The Herreshoff Legacy

Through May 1, 2021

/Lighter, Stronger, Faster/celebrates the spirit of innovation by
examining the unparalleled impact on marine design and engineering by
Nathanael Greene Herreshoff and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.

One of the MIT’s earliest students, N. G. Herreshoff (MIT Class of 1870)
set new standards in design and manufacturing, realizing remarkable
influence and success over a 75-year career. His legendary design
genius, engineering innovations and manufacturing efficiency led to the
production of six America’s Cup winners and hundreds of other highly
regarded vessels, the introduction of modern catamarans, the first
torpedo boats for the U.S. Navy, and the first steam-powered fishing
vessels in the U.S.

MIT has been producing global leaders in marine technology for more than
four generations, making the MIT Museum the ideal venue to tell the
story of this transformative, integrated thinker. Through gallery
installations and interactive digital media drawn from our renownedHart
Nautical Collection
<https://collections.mitmuseum.org/major-collection/nautical/> Herreshoff’s
overall contributions to nautical design and craftsmanship will come to
life in the exhibition and in the online archive of Herreshoff designs.

This exhibition received theMerit Award 2019
<https://segd.org/lighter-stronger-faster%E2%80%94-herreshoff-legacy>from
the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD).
