*English **Morris, Sword and Ceilidh Dancing in Woods Hole and Falmouth*
On Wednesday, May 29, the Vineyard Swordfish of Woods Hole will present
Morris and Sword dancing with guests the Shropshire Bedlams and Martha
Rhoden's Tuppenny Dish from England. They will perform at several
locations in Woods Hole and Falmouth in the afternoon (weather
permitting), with an English-style ceilidh dance open to all in the evening.
The Vineyard Swordfish specialize in longsword dances, which were once
known throughout Europe and settled in the Yorkshire region of England.
They use long steel "swords," based on work implements rather than
military weapons, and perform traditional as well as contemporary and
invented dances. Moving smoothly under and over swords in mesmerizing
patterns, they link the swords together into a variety of shapes for a
spectacular finish.
Shropshire Bedlams and Martha Rhoden's Tuppenny Dish hail from the
county of Shropshire in England, and perform Morris dances from that
area -- the border region between England and Wales -- in contrasting
styles. Morris dancing dates back to medieval times and, like longsword,
was once performed across Europe. It featured at royal English courts
and on the Elizabethan stage (Shakespeare mentions Morris in several
plays), before moving to the countryside where it was taken up by
agricultural workers and village craftsmen. Little is known about
so-called Border Morris, but this long-dormant branch of the tradition
was reinvented in 1982 to create the Shropshire Bedlams, a team that
performs spectacular stick-clashing dances in a strong, loose, athletic
style. The dances of their counterparts, Martha Rhoden's Tuppenny Dish,
require stamina while emphasizing shifting geometry and graceful precision.
The three teams will dance in Woods Hole and Falmouth throughout the
afternoon, weather permitting. From 1:30 to 2:15 they will be at
Community Hall, 68 Water St., Woods Hole, with a possible foray onto the
street. From 2:45 to 3:30, they will perform outside Highfield Hall, 58
Highfield Dr., Falmouth. Moving on to the Falmouth Public Library at 300
Main St., they will dance on the lawn from 3:45 to 4:30. All
performances are free of charge. After a dinner break they will finish
with an English-style ceilidh, or traditional dance party with live
music, at 8pm at Community Hall. All ages and experience levels are
welcome, and all dances will be taught.
Performance times are approximate; inclement weather may delay or cancel
some performances.
More information on the teams is available at:

Vineyard Swordfish is a longsword team and is located in Martha's
Vineyard and Falmouth, Massachusetts. The longsword is rigid, but not
sharp, originally derived from a tanning implement.
