Joseph Yukna, cofounder of the Cape Cod Military Museum, will give a 
talk on Sunday, January 27, on animals and their role in World War I. 
The talk will take place at 12:30 PM at the Waquoit Congregational 
Church, 15 Parsons Lane in East Falmouth. The talk is free and open to 
the public; free-will donations will be accepted.

 >From the mighty elephant to the lowly slug, animals were put to 
amazing uses during WWI. Mr. Yukna’s talk will include stories about 
animals that one would expect to hear about, such as draft horses and 
guard dogs, to unusual animals—such as a uniformed baboon that drew a 
salary, stood guard duty, and got a pension.

The hour-long lecture will include a slide presentation. It is not 
suitable for young children.

If you are wondering what is happening with the US government shutdown, 
you may have noticed the Woods Hole Aquarium and the adjacent NOAA 
buildings are now completely empty. Except for essential services, much 
of the US government is now shut down. This is because government 
agencies are funded on a rolling basis, meaning it is necessary to 
periodically renew funding, so "all the bills" can be paid. Right now 
the funding to run the government has essentially run dry. It will take 
cooperation between the House of Representatives in Washington and the 
US Senate and the Office of the President of the U.S. to craft a 
spending bill which the diverging points of view all agree upon, 
which will enable the government to re-open. That is the background of 
this government shut down situation.
