Before Oprah, before Arsenio, there was Mr. SOUL. On the heels of the
Civil Rights Movement, one fearless black pioneer reconceived a Harlem
Renaissance for a new era, ushering giants and rising stars of black
American culture onto the national television stage. He was hip. He was
smart. He was innovative, political, and gay. In his personal fight for
social equality, the man ensured the Revolution would be televised. He
was Ellis Haizlip. The Revolution was SOUL.

It’s been three years since the passing of David Bowie, and the
musician’s impact is still felt by many. To celebrate the late
singer-songwriter, Bowie tribute band The Young Americans will perform a
selection of the Thin White Duke’s greatest hits at Thunder Road this
Saturday. /(Saturday, Jan. 5 at 9 p.m.; Thunder Road

Clint Eastwood is still acting in movies at 88 years old, and doing a
half decent job of it

reviews of “The Mule” are to be believed. If you want to treat yourself
to a taste of the Eastwood of yesteryear instead, the Coolidge will be
hosting a 35mm screening of “A Fistful of Dollars,” which features
Eastwood in his very first lead role. A lot has changed for Eastwood in
the 55 years since “Dollars” helped launch him to stardom, but his
effortless cool and piercing gray eyes remain. /(Saturday, Jan. 5 from

If you are wondering what is happening with the US government shutdown,
you may have noticed the Woods Hole Aquarium and the adjacent NOAA
buildings are now completely empty. Except for essential services, much
of the US government is now shut down. This is because government
agencies are funded on a rolling basis, meaning it is necessary to
periodically renew funding, so "all the bills" can be paid. Right now
the funding to run the government has essentially run dry. It will take
cooperation between the House of Representatives in Washington and the
US Senate and the Office of the President of the U.S. to craft a
spending bill which the diverging points of view all agree upon,
which will enable the government to re-open. That is the background of
this government shut down situation.
Wikipedia can give more basic information on this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_shutdowns_in_the_United_States
What else is happening in Washington this week?
The US Congress has reconvened yesterday, Thursday, as the 116th session
of the US Congress. To highlight one interesting point, this congress is
the most diverse in US history, which many consider to be a good thing:

Most of the racial, gender and religious diversity will be represented
by Democratic lawmakers in the House and Senate, even though the party
is the minority of both chambers.
