*The U.S. Department of State Exchange Visitor Program has seen an 
increasing number of phone and email scams affecting exchange visitors. 
The Department has seen an uptick in housing and rental scams where 
exchange visitors transfer money before they start their program to a 
fraudulent realtor or landlord, scamming the victims out of hundreds if 
not thousands of dollars. Other reported scams involve phone calls from 
alleged government representatives demanding personal information and 
money with threats of deportation from the U.S.*

for payment by phone—especially payments in those ways. They will also 
not ask you to confirm basic personal information, such as passport 
number, over the phone.*
