Cotuit Center for the Arts will present internationally touring
singer/songwriter Matt Nakoa on Friday, October 26, at 7:30 PM.

Mr. Nakoa grew up on a small goat farm in Smyrna, New York, and began
composing music as a teenager. His initial goal was to be a concert
pianist. Then he won a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in
Boston as a vocalist. There he studied alongside soon-to-be Grammy
winners St. Vincent and Esperanza Spaulding.

After college, Mr. Nakoa toured with his band, The Fens, and eventually
landed in New York City’s vibrant piano bar scene. He quickly became a
star performer at Brandy’s Piano Bar in Manhattan, with lines outside
the door each Saturday night.

Mr. Nakoa’s first solo album, “Light in the Dark,” is an eclectic pop
opus. In contrast, “A Dozen Other Loves” explores a simple acoustic palette.

His piano music has received favorable reviews in publications including
The New York Times, and his film scoring has been featured by Disney
Studios. Mr. Nakoa now tours internationally, recently performing at the
White House and throughout India, and he regularly performs with folk
musician Tom Rush. He has earned awards for his songwriting, including a
win at Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk Competition.

Tickets to see Mr. Nakoa are $35; $30 for balcony seating. There is a $5
discount for members and a $2 discount for seniors and veterans.

Saturday at the Gardner Museum in Boston:

While the tapestry of society has become increasingly complex, the basic
principles of weaving and fiber arts have not changed.

In these Saturday workshops, witness the emergence of fun patterns and
forms through simple repetition and experimentation with fibers. In the
Studio, try your hand at working with yarn and create a nontraditional
tapestry of your own.

Workshops are developed in collaboration with /Polly Thayer Starr Artist
Series /visiting artist Shane Maxwell.

"The town itself is perhaps the dearest place to live in, in all New
England..nowhere in all America will you find more patrician-like
houses, parks and gardens more opulent, than in New Bedford…all these
brave houses and flowery gardens came from the Atlantic, Pacific, and
Indian oceans.
