The Hans Hofmann Legacy: Creative Diversity

Cape Cod Museum of Art

January 18-March 11, 2018

Public Reception – January 25, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Hans Hofmann’s influence and importance as a teacher and an artist on
American art is momentous.  – Deborah Forman, Guest Curator

Hans Hofmann taught the exciting new approaches of European modernism to
the thousands of students who flocked to his Provincetown and New York
schools. From 1935 to 1957, his classes inspired a new direction in
American art. ”Although Hofmann advocated very specific rules and
approaches, he was acutely aware of his students’ individuality and
encouraged their creative instincts. As a result, the diversity of
styles his students achieved is remarkable” says Deborah Forman, Guest
Curator for the show.

In Boston:

Based on the Academy Award-winning film, *SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE* tells the
story of young Will Shakespeare, who is suffering a severe case of
writer’s block as the deadline fast approaches to deliver his new play,
/Romeo and Ethel, The Pirate’s Daughter/. Enter Viola, a headstrong
noblewoman and admirer of Will’s, who disguises herself as a boy so she
can skirt the law and appear (as a girl) in his play. But when the
playwright and his muse fall in love, the plot undergoes some surprising
rewrites. Mistaken identities, courtly intrigue, and backstage bickering
are all part of the fun in this raucous romantic comedy of errors that
reminds us that all the world’s a stage and love is unrehearsed.

Contemporary works by Takashi Murakami, one of the most imaginative and
important artists working today, are juxtaposed with treasures from the
MFA’s renowned collection of Japanese art. The exhibition reveals how
Murakami’s contemporary vision is richly inflected by a dynamic
conversation with the historical past, framed by a creative dialogue
with the great Japanese art historian, Professor Nobuo Tsuji. Together,
Murakami and Professor Tsuji have chosen the objects on view in the
exhibition, including paintings and sculpture created by the artist in
direct response to Japanese masterpieces from the MFA’s collection, such
as Soga Shōhaku’s 35-foot-long /Dragon and Clouds/ (1763) and /Minister
Kibi’s Adventures in China/ (12th century).
