*

One of the world’s foremost authorities on scrimshaw will lead a seminar
about the indigenous shipboard art of 19th-century whalemen at the New
Bedford Whaling Museum on Saturday, September 9, from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Stuart M. Frank, senior curator emeritus of the whaling museum, will be
joined by the faculty of the Scrimshaw Forensics team for Scrimshaw 101.
Seasoned hands and newcomers to the world of scrimshaw are welcome.

Topics to be covered at Scrimshaw 101 include scrimshaw pictorial works
(boxes, canes, swifts, and other built works); how to authenticate,
restore, and care for scrimshaw; and an up-to-date report of the
scrimshaw market. Handouts, bibliographies and reference materials will
be provided.

Registration is required. Cost to attend is $25 for museum members; $35
for nonmembers. Register at www.whalingmuseum.org
<http://www.whalingmuseum.org/> or call 508-997-0046, extension 100.

*English as a second language*

*-free classes all year in Falmouth*

*
*

*
*

**

*

For your information, the new season of adult ESL classes at St. Patrick
Church in Falmouth
<https://www.google.com/maps/place/Saint+Patrick%27s+Church/@41.5517479,-70.6086778,15z/data=%214m5%213m4%211s0x0:0xde5bde665ef3c0c8%218m2%213d41.5517479%214d-70.6086778>
will start soon.

Registration is on Wed., Sept. 6, from 6:30 to 8:00.

We offer about six different levels, from beginner to advanced.

There’s no academic credit, but we give a certificate to students who
complete a year.

Some find the certificate useful for further study or work.

We are flexible about accepting students throughout the year, as long as
their English is at a reasonably appropriate level for a class in
progress (i.e., at midyear not a total beginner) and there is still space.

If you wanted to refer a student later, he or she could e-mail me or
call me at 508-563-2492.

Over the past 17 years we’ve had students of many different
nationalities (up to 46 now), ages, and educational backgrounds.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Susan P. Morrison, coordinator and teacher
