Hi Joanne,
Please add the following to the upcoming yellowsheets. I have a blurb too, if there is room.
Wed, 2/8/2017, noon-1pm.
Speaker: Richard McBride, Supervisory Research Fishery Biologist, Northeast Fisheries Science Center.
Location: NEFSC Stephen H. Clark Conference Room, NOAA Aquarium Building
Title: Improve your scientific writing.
Blurb: This presentation will let you in on a poorly-kept secret: the way people should write a scientific paper differs from the way most people read the paper, and neither follows the order of sections appearing in the final print version. Learn how to harness the power that exists in every section, paragraph, sentence, word, and punctuation mark, while making the science shine. This ~35 minute presentation will be followed by open discussion on the topic.
Wed, 2/15/2017, noon-1pm.
Speaker: Richard McBride, Supervisory Research Fishery Biologist, Northeast Fisheries Science Center.
Location: NEFSC Stephen H. Clark Conference Room, NOAA Aquarium Building
Title: Engage with scientific reviewing.
Blurb. Can you tell the difference between truth and truthiness? Can you help the editor spot an unnecessary table or an extraneous paragraph?. And how do you really feel about the split infinitive (or beginning a sentence with a conjunction, for that matter)? This presentation will outline what to look for when reviewing a manuscript or proposal, and how to provide constructive criticism to an editor, author, or funding review panel. This ~35 minute presentation will be followed by open discussion on the topic.
Joel, please pass the word as appropriate.
Thanks. -Rich
