He says they sampled it today and found a large variety of diatoms (Nitzchia, Thalassiosira, Leptocylindrus, Chaetoceros spp.) plus some dinoflagelleates (Protoperidinium) and quite a few Noctiluca flagellates that would help explain some of the color but not orangish red, tomato soup color as it occurs when highly dominant. Scott and Rick Safford have been identifying phytoplankton there for about 20 years (after being trained by Rita Horner) and thus are very experienced. They did not sample far inside near Port Orchard or Brownsville today, but I trust they will soon if the weather continues to be warm. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>All the best,<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'>Jack<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><div><div style='border:none;border-top:solid #B5C4DF 1.0pt;padding:3.0pt 0in 0in 0in'><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'>From:</span></b><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif"'> Krembs, Christopher (ECY) [mailto:ckre461@ECY.WA.GOV] <br><b>Sent:</b> Monday, May 14, 2012 5:12 PM<br><b>To:</b> Krembs, Christopher (ECY); guatemal@u.washington.edu; Howard, Sandy (ECY); Maloy, Carol (ECY); Bos, Julia (ECY); Sackmann, Brandon (ECY); jackrensel@att.net; soundhab@whoi.edu<br><b>Cc:</b> Vera Trainer; Hannach, Gabriela; guatemal@u.washington.edu; Stark, Kimberle; Stephanie Moore<br><b>Subject:</b> Large dramatic bloom in Central Basin and South Puget Sound<o:p></o:p></span></p></div></div><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>We just returned from a EOPS flight over Dana Passage, Carr Inlet, Central Basin (3 PM) and I have not seen a (diatom?) bloom this intense since we have been flying in Central Sound.</span> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal>Dr. Christopher Krembs<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Senior Oceanographer, Marine Monitoring Unit<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Environmental Assessment Program<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Washington State Department of Ecology<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>300 Desmond Dr. SE, Lacey<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>PO BOX 47710<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Olympia, WA 98504-7710<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>e-mail: <a href="mailto:ckre461@ecy.wa.gov">ckre461@ecy.wa.gov</a><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Tel: 360-407-6675<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p></div></body></html>
