A significant Heterosigma bloom is occurring presently in
the Brownsville (Port Orchard) and Bainbridge Island (eastern shore including Port
Blakely). The aerial extent of the bloom is presently uncertain, but levels
exceed 1 million cells per liter in some areas, sufficient to cause mortality
of wild and farmed fish. To clarify, the actual level(s) of sublethal or
acutely lethal exposure for fish are not known and probably variable depending
on conditions or ecotype (strain) of the cells.
