<p class=MsoPlainText>Tim Tynan of NOAA reports (I paraphrase): <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText>Elden Hillaire, The Lummi Nation's fisheries manager and
a gillnetter who fishes this time of year at Point Roberts near the US-Canadian
border. The Lummi fishers have been complaining for the last several
years about thick blooms in the area that coat their gill nets in short order
and make them unfishable. This occurred last year during pink salmon fishing in
September and greatly reduced harvest and made net handling very difficult.
This year it is in October it is during the chum salmon fishery, with the
salmon part of the harvestable quota of Fraser River Chum salmon.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText>The species causing this bloom is not known and it would
be good if someone could secure a fresh sample, place it in a cooler and then
NOAA staff in Seattle may be able to identify it quickly. Calls were made
to Tribal staff but it was late on Friday afternoon. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoPlainText>The probability of harmful algal blooms always is high on
Friday nights. <o:p></o:p></p>
