<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Woods Hole Scientific Organizations to Host National Discussion on Increasing Diversity in Science<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In 2002 six scientific organizations in Woods Hole formed the Woods Hole Diversity Initiative (WHDI) to work together on increasing diversity in the Woods Hole science community, and on making the community a more welcoming place.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Diversity Initiative’s flagship program, the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP) was established in 2009 to bring talented under-represented minorities to Woods Hole for ten-week summer research experiences.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Next week (June 27 to 29) the Diversity Initiative is hosting a workshop, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), to examine the effectiveness of undergraduate
<span style="color:black">internship </span>programs in achieving the goal of a broader, deeper and more diverse talent pool of college graduates entering the geosciences.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The workshop will bring together directors and graduates of eight undergraduate research programs, including PEP, three other Woods Hole-based programs (at Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Woods Hole
 Research Center), and programs at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Savannah State University, University of California, Monterey Bay, and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Colorado.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Workshop participants also include college faculty and administrators, government officials, and scholars with expertise in diversity, education, and research. The participants are drawn from an array of public and private universities,
 including many Minority Serving Institutions. The two-and-one-half day workshop will explore Best Practices for intern programs that seek to increase diversity in science, and will provide the six Woods Hole institutions with an opportunity to expand existing
 linkages with Minority Serving Institutions. The workshop will also provide a platform for program graduates to network with colleagues nationally and with professionals within the Woods Hole scientific community.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“This is an exciting workshop that is bringing together an unprecedented collection of educators, and a talented group of young scientists who are early in their careers,” Peg Brandon, Sea Education Association President, said. “We will
 have in Woods Hole next week the critical mass that is needed to take the next steps in strengthening undergraduate programs that bring diversity into the geosciences.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The six organizations that make up the Woods Hole Diversity Initiative are the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, Sea Education Association (SEA) US Geological Survey, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
 (WHOI), and Woods Hole Research Center. The National Technical Association (NTA), the nation’s oldest technical organization founded by African Americans, is a co-organizer of the workshop. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a co-sponsor of PEP and
 a participant in the workshop.<o:p></o:p></p>
