<div><span>Cape Cod is home to numerous planned or ongoing projects designed to restore coastal wetlands that have been lost or degraded due to human intervention. One of the primary methods of restoring coastal wetlands on Cape Cod involves the removal of man-made structures that restrict natural tidal flow.</span></div>

<div><span>The March 14th event will feature presentations on recent tidal restoration projects:</span></div>

<div><span><strong>Robert Duncanson, Ph.D, Director of Health and Natural Resources for the Town of Chatham, will talk about the Muddy Creek Restoration Bridge Project.</strong> In 2016, a century-old earthen dike was replaced with a bridge, restoring unimpeded tidal flow into Muddy Creek, a 55-acre estuary shared by Harwich and Chatham. </span></div>

<div><strong>April Wobst, Restoration Ecologist with the Cape Cod Restoration Coordination Center established by Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC), will talk about the Parkers River restoration in Yarmouth, Stony Brook restoration in Brewster and other projects around the Cape.</strong></div>

<div><span>Salt marshes are often the focus of restoration efforts. APCC estimates that more than one-third of Cape Cod's salt marshes have been lost or degraded due to tidal barriers and other man-made interventions. Salt marshes are among the most productive ecosystems on the planet, rivaling rainforests. When an acre of salt marsh is lost or degraded, also lost are the vital "services" the salt marsh provides to the surrounding ecosystem: habitat for fish and wildlife, buffer against storm surge, filtering of nitrogen and other pollutants that otherwise enter coastal waters, and storage for carbon that otherwise contributes to climate change, among others.</span></div>

<div><span>The Herring River Restoration Project in Wellfleet, now undergoing design and permitting, will restore 570 acres of salt marsh and estuarine wetlands in its first phase. It will be the largest coastal wetland restoration project in New England. </span></div>
