Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. through mid-August to learn about the environmental
non-profit’s innovative aquaculture program in the North Bay area. Three Bays
is located at 864 Main Street in Osterville.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">“Aquaculture
is important to healthy marine environments since oysters naturally filter
water, up to fifty gallons a day per animal, removing toxic nutrients including
nitrogen from the ecosystem,” explained Lindsey B. Counsell, executive director
of Three Bays. A healthy oyster
population helps prevent harmful algal blooms that threaten wildlife living in
and around the water. “We have found that people are very curious about our
aquaculture program and how it can benefit water quality, so we’re continuing
Coffee Tuesday again this year,” Counsell added.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">Nationwide,
oysters have been used for years to mitigate water quality problems in impaired
environments including Chesapeake Bay, Long Island and Boston Harbor. Three
Bays has been growing oysters since 2008 when it teamed with the Town of
Barnstable’s Natural Resources Program to purchase 60,000 oyster seeds and grew
