The Gills Club Special Event
BREWSTER, MA The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster hosts a
Gills Club special event featuring Dr. Ruth Leeney, founder of Protect
Africa’s Sawfishes project, Saturday, July 23, 2016
from 1pm – 3pm.

The Gills Club, an education initiative of the Atlantic White Shark
Conservancy, is excited to partner with the New England Aquarium to host
Dr. Ruth Leeney founder of Protect Africa’s Sawfishes. All five
species of sawfishes are threatened with extinction and Dr. Leeney is in
a hurry to collect data on sawfishes throughout Africa as there was
almost no up-to-date information on whether sawfishes still existed
anywhere in Africa.

The aim of Protect Africa’s Sawfishes is to work with local
communities throughout Africa to find out where sawfishes used to be
present, in which areas they are still present, what threats they face in
those areas and how they can best be protected. Protect Africa’s
Sawfishes also works with communities in areas where sawfish
populations exist, so that the protection of sawfishes and their habitats
can benefit fishing communities in some of the poorest places in the
world.

Dr. Leeney studied Botany and Zoology in Dublin, Ireland, and spent ten
years working on dolphins and whales in the UK, Cape Cod, Greece,
Namibia, Gabon and Senegal. The presentation will be followed with an
activity for younger audience members where they will be able to develop
their understanding of Dr. Leeney's work through hands-on experience.
