The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents
Butterflies Across Cape Cod
with

BREWSTER, MA The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster is
proud to present
Butterflies Across Cape Cod with Mark Mello, Monday, June 27,
2016 at 1pm.

Butterflies, with few exceptions, are tied to two resources:
appropriate food for the caterpillars and reliable sources of nectar for
the adults. Fields that are alive with the flowers of milkweeds, Queen
Anne’s Lace, vetch and Alfalfa are magnets for some of our common and
showiest butterflies such as Monarchs and Black Swallowtails. However,
the less showy, but equally beautiful butterflies of Cape Cod’s barrens
and wetlands also define the Cape’s character. These special places
contain rare or habitat restricted species such as Frosted and Hoary
Elfins, Bog Coppers and Edwards’ Hairstreaks. Often in these locations,
these species are found in higher numbers than anywhere else in the
coastal plain of New England, namely Plymouth, Cape Cod and the Islands.
Rather than being devoid of butterflies, the Cape actually provides
critical habitat for many.

Mark Mello, Research Director at the Lloyd Center for Environmental
Studies in Dartmouth, MA since 1999, will do a slide presentation on the
Cape’s butterfly fauna, and discuss results of some of the long-term
butterfly census data collected by the Lloyd Center since 1986. Time
permitting and number of participants, will be taken into consideration
for a short butterfly walk on the Museum property.
