If you have ten minutes and are interested, Alexa Kretsch (an MS student at SMAST in New Bedford, MA) needs help with a small experiment to find out if humans might be able to distinguish between surfclam and ocean quahog siphon holes that are sometimes visible in sediments off the Northeast coast. Siphon holes are all you can see of a surfclam or ocean quahog while they are buried in the sediments and filter feeding.

She is doing the experiment because folks are getting interested in using optical surveys like the SMAST video and NEFSC/WHOI HabCAM surveys to measure abundance of surfclams and ocean quahogs. The results of the experiment are one modest step towards determining feasibility. I am interested in this question too.

Anyway, Alexa needs to boost her sample size and she does not care about your background or profession.
