The Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) will present a three-part lecture series on Environmental Tipping Points from August through October. The first lecture will be held on Thursday, August 22, when WHRC Senior Scientist Richard A. Houghton will speak on “Carbon Dioxide and a Runaway Greenhouse,” which will focus on the interaction between the carbon cycle and the warming of the Earth.

Dr. Houghton is an ecologist whose longtime research has been on the role that terrestrial ecosystems play in climate change and the global carbon cycle. His area of expertise is documentation of changes in land use and determination of historic and current sources and sinks of carbon resulting directly from human activity. Dr. Houghton has held positions at the Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory and at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He currently serves as Acting President of the Woods Hole Research Center.

The next lecture in the series will be held on September 26 when Dr. Richard S. Williams will present “The Earth's Disappearing Cryosphere” and address rapid changes in glaciers, sea ice, and permafrost that document major climatic tipping points. In the third lecture on October 24, Dr. Michael T. Coe will discuss deforestation in the Amazon, which can lead to radical climate shifts affecting forests, crops, and hydropower.

All three Environmental Tipping Points lectures will take place at 5:30 pm in WHRC’s Harbourton Auditorium, 149 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth, MA. There is no charge for the lectures and the public is warmly invited to attend. Parking and seating are limited and reservations are essential.
