<span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">The problems of nitrogen pollution are becoming all too familiar for communities across Southeastern Massachusetts. Coastal waters are clogged with algae each summer, threatening tourism, fisheries and the quality of life of the region’s residents. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">The need to act is clear – but how to plan and pay for a cleanup is not. To help local cities and towns take action to reduce nitrogen pollution, the Buzzards Bay Coalition is hosting a free workshop on Wednesday, April 3 at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">The workshop will highlight comprehensive planning and innovative funding solutions at the local, regional and state levels.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""> </span></p><ul style="margin-top:0in" type="disc"><li class="MsoNormal" style><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">Paul Niedzwiecki, executive director of the Cape Cod Commission, will talk about the process and implications of regional planning. Cape Cod recently received $3.35 million from the Commonwealth to develop a regional wastewater management plan to reduce nutrient pollution to the Cape’s waterways to meet water quality standards.</span></li>
</ul><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""> </span></p><ul style="margin-top:0in" type="disc"><li class="MsoNormal" style><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">Jag Khuman, director of the Maryland Dept. of the Environment Water Quality Financing Administration, will discuss strategies for funding a cost-effective cleanup. Maryland’s Bay Restoration Fund, instituted in 2004, raises more than $100 million each year to upgrade the state’s major wastewater treatment plants and individual septic systems to reduce nutrient discharges to the Chesapeake Bay.</span></li>
</ul><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""> </span></p><ul style="margin-top:0in" type="disc"><li class="MsoNormal" style><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">Dr. Robert Duncanson, director of the Chatham Dept. of Health and the Environment, will speak about how comprehensive wastewater planning at the local level can lead to funding and achieve results.</span></li>
</ul><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif""> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif"">The Decision Makers Workshop is appropriate for anybody looking for solutions to reduce nitrogen pollution, but is particularly beneficial for town officials and staff, as well as community members and businesses with a concern for clean water. The workshop is approved for Training Contact Hours for wastewater treatment plant operators and septic system installers.</span></p>

A March 6 workshop in New Bedford shared the latest innovations in reducing nitrogen in wastewater, and a workshop on March 20 in East Wareham outlined solutions for reducing nitrogen from stormwater, agriculture and landscaping. </span></p>
