Writers Eva Saulitis and Christine Byl live in two different parts of Alaska, where their jobs in wilderness deeply inform their creative work. Saulitis is a marine biologist
whose research is based in Prince William Sound, while Byl lives on the tundra of the Interior, and builds and designs trails. This spring, Beacon Press in Boston launches their two new books: Saulitis'
Into Great Silence: A Memoir of Discovery and Loss in the Realm of Vanishing Orcas; and Byl's
Dirt Work: An Education in the Woods. Both books tell the story of how a working life enmeshed in the natural world informs who a person becomes. Their memoirs blend the specific details of their jobs, the natural history of the places they work, and
the narratives that arise from apprenticeship. Visuals from their life and work in Alaska will accompany the reading, and a question and answer period will follow. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Christine Byl is supported, in part, by a grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
