WHY Support young people who are interested in<br>
and knowledgeable about the natural world<br>
by staffing the National Ocean Sciences Bowl<br>
"Blue Lobster Bowl" regional competition,<br>
a fast-paced, one-day competition among<br>
22 high school teams from MA. Topics include<br>
the biology, chemistry, geology, physics,<br>
history, and economics of the ocean as<br>
well as ocean-related current events. The<br>
winning team will compete in the nationals<br>

This is a fun, fast-paced project with which<br>
nearly 250 PMD volunteers have enjoyed helping<br>
in these critical roles since 1999.<br>
<br>
Each volunteer will receive a free t-shirt,<br>
lunch, swag, and parking if needed.<br>
<br>
Non-science-judge, non-science-grader volunteers<br>
need NO science/ocean knowledge, just keen<br>
attention to detail, positive attitudes toward all<br>
competitors and schools, and attentive patience<br>
during down times while questions are being<br>
challenged/graded and between rounds.<br>
<br>
It takes nearly 70 volunteers to staff<br>
11 competition rooms for 22 teams,<br>
keeping time, keeping score, and judging<br>
rules*. (We need 7 experienced<br>
volunteers to stay until ~5:30pm to<br>
officiate for the trophy rounds.)<br>
We also need experienced Moderators<br>
(ideally past competitors) and Science<br>
Room Graders for the Team Challenge Questions<br>
and science challenge resolution.<br>
<br>
To prepare, most volunteers MUST ATTEND<br>
a 2013 training session so they are able to<br>
function without errors in during this high-<br>
intensity competition. Even if you have volunteered<br>
for or participated in NOSB or another quiz<br>
bowl in past years, you must participate<br>
in training on 2/27 in order to familiarize<br>
yourself with the rules & regulations<br>
and to demonstrate your mastery of the moderator,<br>
science judge, rules judge, timekeeper, and/or<br>
scorekeeper role(s)<br>

The 2013 Blue Lobster Bowl is hosted by<br>
MIT Sea Grant, which has retained PMD to<br>
recruit, train, and manage all volunteers for<br>
the 2013 competition.<br>

*Only experienced volunteers and past competitors,<br>
and volunteers with legal backgrounds serve<br>
as rules judges, given the complexity of the<br>
rules and fast game pace.<br>

**Only experienced volunteers and past competitors<br>
generally serve as moderators given the<br>
complexity of this role. We encourage past<br>
competitors to aspire to this volunteer level.<br>

We cannot accommodate groups, so each individual<br>
member of a group/family must register<br>
him-/her-self separately.<br>

Incomplete submissions cannot be honored,<br>
even if you have previously volunteered.<br>
<br>
No partial participation can be accommodated<br>
for this competition. This means that we<br>
canNOT accommodate late arrivals.<br>
<br>
After you sign-up, you will see a confirmation screen,<br>
but NOT receive any email message. Then PMD will<br>
email specific details the day before the training,<br>
including directions by public transit and by<br>
car, checklist on how to prepare, map,<br>
and a waiver.<br>

Then a few days before the competition,<br>
PMD will email final details about the competition day.<br>
