Upon arrival, Stephanie found a weak, hypothermic and debilitated bird. Stephanie and Wild Care volunteer Josh Drew quickly scooped up the bird using a large towel and brought it to Wild Care for treatment.

Since Hurricane Sandy swept over our coast last Monday the 29th, there have been many sightings of Brown Pelicans throughout Cape Cod and the islands. On the Atlantic Coast during the summer months, Brown Pelicans can be found breeding from Maryland south to Florida on offshore islands. It has become increasingly common to see pelicans during the winter months in Massachusetts but the recent hurricane has brought an unprecedented number of pelican sightings.

“Wild Care has never had a Brown Pelican at our Center!” stated Executive Director Stephanie Ellis. “I have worked with them on the West Coast and we are extremely excited to provide care for this bird that has been blown off-course. They consume an enormous amount of fish and we will be in need of donations from the public to help with the cost of food. Donations of unflavored Pedialyte are also welcome.” The bird is in critical condition and is currently being stabilized and receiving supportive care.

WILD CARE’s wildlife rehabilitators treat birds, mammals and reptiles brought to the center, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild when they are capable of independent survival. Through public education, WILD CARE works to prevent wildlife casualties and works to engage the community in conservation through volunteerism. Since our founding WILD CARE has accepted over 22,000 wild creatures, representing over 275 species of native birds, mammals and reptiles.
