<DIV>WOODS HOLE CELEBRATION (January 1st)</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Cape Cod has an unusual celebration that honors the coastal
environment..... At noon on New Years Day,</DIV>
<DIV>families gather at the Woods Hole Community Hall, on Water Street, in
Woods Hole. There's a holiday</DIV>
<DIV>walk around Eel Pond past research centers, classrooms, and government
offices. Children bring holiday noisemakers, colorful
flags, and costumes. There may be "some
dancing in the streets."</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The crowd goes down to the water's edge to "toast the coast" and to make
New Years Day resolutions to help protect the
environment. Non-alcoholic beverages are
used. After the toast, everybody goes back to the Woods Hole
Community Hall to enjoy a potluck party with leftover holiday
refreshments.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Literature about environmental projects will be on display at the Community
Hall.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The New Years Day events in Woods Hole are free.
Everybody is invited. The sponsoring groups include Falmouth's "No
Place for Hate" organization, the Falmouth Clergy Association, and the Sierra
Club's</DIV>
<DIV>Cape Cod and Islands Group. The New Years Day walks
started in the year 2001.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>William Shakespeare influenced the Woods Hole walks. In
past years, the walk was led by the great wizard Prospero, from Shakespeare's
play "The Tempest." In 2011, the
wizard Prospero becomes</DIV>
<DIV>Prospera, who is a woman with extraordinary powers.
(A new movie version of "The Tempest" has</DIV>
<DIV>recently appeared, with actress Helen Mirren starring as Prospera.)</DIV>
