The Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) will sponsor the 4th NBI Week on Nantucket, Wednesday, September 15 – Tuesday, September 21, 2010. The NBI is a collaborative of Nantucket’s leading conservation organizations together with universities, non-governmental organizations, and individual partners on and off-island acting to inventory and monitor the many species of plants and animals found on the island and to educate the community about Nantucket’s rich local biodiversity.

The NBI seeks scientists and naturalists to visit Nantucket to conduct biodiversity surveys in their area of expertise. Participants can spend as little as a day or up to the full week or more on island. We encourage you to join us in whatever way works best. To join us, download a registration form from the website (below) or call or email NBI Chair Cheryl Beaton or Co-Chair(s) Diane Lang or Emily MacKinnon (information below.) Deadline for Registration is August 15, 2010.

Housing and funding to support parking and ferry travel are available for qualified registrants needing financial support. Housing and funding are limited so please complete the Financial Need section of the Registration Form and submit it as soon as possible.

NBI Week offers an exciting opportunity to those interested in documenting the biodiversity of the island and adjacent waters to visit Nantucket to conduct short-term inventories or to initiate long-term biodiversity research, to work with island naturalists and conservation groups and to provide an educational experience for the public.

During the week there will be free public programs, field trips and workshops for participants and the people of Nantucket. Ample time will be available to work on the taxonomic group of your expertise.

Our Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative website will be updated as the plans for the week develop. Please check the site to learn all the important details regarding NBI Week.

We hope to see you on island for a great week. Please join us!
