Assistant Extension Educator-in-Residence<BR>
Land Use Planning<BR>

Middlesex County Extension Center, Haddam, CT<BR>
The Department of Extension’s Middlesex County Extension Center located in Haddam, CT is seeking applications for an Assistant Extension Educator-in-Residence position. The successful candidate will develop and conduct statewide Extension outreach education programs for Connecticut communities on a wide variety of topics related to community and land use planning. He/she will be a faculty member in the Department of Extension and the lead educator and manager of the Land Use Academy, an educational program of the UConn Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR). This position reports to the Head of the Department of Extension, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.<BR>
Duties and Responsibilities: (1) Develop and implement Extension programs to provide information, education, and technical assistance to community land use decision makers on a wide range of planning topics, including comprehensive planning, open space planning, conducting community resource inventories, economic development, and roles and responsibilities of land use commissioners. This work will include, but is not limited to: developing Extension education programs and materials for land use decision makers and other audiences, including workshops (formal and informal), publications, and web information; evaluation of programs; and writing of grant proposals and project reports; (2) The successful candidate will be the lead educator of the Land Use Academy, a CLEAR outreach program that focuses on basic training for new commissioners; and (3) As part of the CLEAR team, he/she will integrate the Academy training program with other CLEAR research and outreach programs, with the Connecticut Sea Grant program, and with existing and new partner organizations involved with training of local officials.<BR>
Minimum Qualifications: (1) An earned Master’s in a field related to land use planning; (2) A minimum of three years of experience in a field related to land use planning, preferably as a town, regional or consulting planner; (3) Demonstrated superior communication skills, including public speaking and writing of educational materials; (4) Strong interpersonal skills; (5) The ability to work as an integral member of a diverse project team, but also to work independently; (6) Experience in writing and managing grants; (7) Experience in developing and delivering effective educational workshops and presentations; (8) Proficiency at standard office word processing, spreadsheet and internet browsing software. In addition, must have demonstrated ability and willingness to travel to meeting sites. Mileage reimbursement for work-related travel is reimbursed for personal vehicle use upon proof of insurability and valid driver’s license. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, is required to reach target audiences. Some out-of-state travel may also be necessary.<BR>
Preferred Qualifications: (1) Experience working directly with local land use officials on community planning issues, including both economic development and natural resource protection; (2) Demonstrated understanding of the planning process in Connecticut, including the statutory roles and responsibilities of local land use commissions; (3) Demonstrated understanding of the connection between land use activities and natural resource protection; (4) Familiarity with internet, geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, and database management software and technologies; (5) Familiarity with program marketing; (6) Familiarity with Cooperative Extension non-advocacy, research-based, educational programming.<BR>
Compensation is commensurate with educational background and experience. Health insurance is included in the benefits package. This is a grant funded, end-dated position subject to annual renewals, contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Initial appointment is 12 months.<BR>

Water Resource Management<BR>

The Department of Extension and Connecticut Sea Grant College Program are seeking applications for an Assistant Extension Educator-in-Residence position, which will be located at the Middlesex County Extension Center in Haddam, CT. The successful candidate will develop and conduct Extension outreach education programs for land use decision makers in Connecticut’s communities, with a focus on sustainable water resource management. He/she will be the chief educator and manager of the Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO) program, an award-winning educational program of the Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR) that is a collaboration of the Department of Extension and Connecticut Sea Grant. Topics included in this program include sustainable land use planning approaches to stormwater management, low impact development techniques, and climate change-related water management issues. The Extension educator will be a faculty member in the Department of Extension, and a member of both the CLEAR and Connecticut Sea Grant teams. This position reports to the Head, Department of Extension, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.<BR>

This work will include, but is not limited to: developing research results into Extension education programs and materials for land use decision makers and other audiences, including workshops (formal and informal), publications, and web information; evaluation of programs; and writing of grant proposals and project reports; 2) As part of the Sea Grant team, work closely with Sea Grant colleagues to ensure that NEMO programs meet Sea Grant goals for sustainable coastal development; 3) As part of the NEMO team, work in concert with the principals from other CLEAR programs to provide research-based information and education for land use decision makers; and 4) Work with University departments and officials to help implement ongoing, long-term on-campus water protection and low impact development (LID) projects and programs.<BR>
