Academy Awards Scholarship<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>BUZZARDS
BAY, MA (February 24, 2010) – Cadet First Class Nicholas M. Hartt of Methuen
was recently awarded the Captain James S. Jackson, Jr. Scholarship at
Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Established in memory of James S.
Jackson, Sr. and Robert G. Dowling, the scholarship provides for a cadet from
the Academy to attend the US Coast Guard Approved 100 Ton Master License
Program offered by the Center for Maritime Training at MMA. Mr. Hartt is
a senior regimental officer majoring in International Maritime Business at the
Academy, and is also employed with Entertainment Cruises in Boston.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Founded
in 2008, this award is an annual scholarship provided to a cadet at MMA for
participation in the 100 Ton Master license program. The Academy has
traditionally prepared Marine Engineering and Marine Transportation majors for
the United States Coast Guard exam and licensing process. In recent
decades, the Academy has expanded its offerings to include non-license track
majors such as Facilities and Environmental Engineering, Marine Safety and
Environmental Protection, Emergency Management, and International Maritime
Business. While a USCG license is not a requirement for these majors,
adding such a license to a fresh resume increases a graduate’s
marketability, especially in a challenging job market.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>The
Captain James S. Jackson, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established in memory of
James S. Jackson, Sr. and Robert G. Dowling. James S. Jackson, Sr. was
stationed in the Pacific theater aboard the U.S.S. Franklin during World War
II. Following his return home, he continued sailing and became a member
of the Bristol Yacht Club and the Attleboro Power Squadron. He shared his
lifetime passion for sailing with his son and daughter. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Robert
“Bob” G. Dowling grew up sailing his Beetle Cat on Bass River on
Cape Cod. During World War II he was based in New Guinea and taught
navigation for the duration of the war. Upon his return to the States, he
became active in the Power Squadron and spent time cruising with his wife and
three children on Nantucket Sound aboard the “Little Sister”.
Bob served on the Hyannis Yacht Club race committee while watching his children
racing their own Beetle Cat “Catnap” on Lewis Bay, where they
continue to carry on his and their love of the water.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Captain
James S. Jackson, Jr. teaches the Captain’s Course at Massachusetts Maritime
Academy and established this scholarship to honor his father and father-in-law
and their passion for the sea. The Center for Maritime Training at the
Academy offers the 80-hour course on campus in Buzzards Bay, on Martha’s
Vineyard, and at Green Harbor Marina in Marshfield. The courses run
year-round and are available in evening, afternoon and daytime formats.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
